I'll fix your little red bookshelf

I start things and never finish them. You're welcome Tolstoy. But today I begin on a new journey. And as I say at the beginning of every journey, I will get to the end, I swear it.

As I sit typing this my 1 1/2 year old is cuddled next to me. I am reading him a book and typing with one hand and my 4 year old is scribbling a picture at my feet. I am surrounded by beautiful family and I could not ask for anything more... well there is one thing.

I OF COURSE, have a sense of accomplishment for creating two beautiful creatures but I also have a longing to contribute in some other way. I have a desire to create something else. For some reason my mind went to the movie the fly, that's not what I mean... at least not at this point in my life.

When I was in my twenties I learned how to refinish furniture and while I never did anything but update my diggs with my knowledge I always thought I might do more with it. So last week I refinished a bookshelf and I just finished it yesterday and posted an add on CL for its sale. AND WHAT IS THAT FEELING??? Aggh yes, it's of accomplishment, yeay!

Here is our bookshelf

So ugly right? I wanted to do a red paint job on the old boy. So first I primed it, it took three coats =). Then I painted it red- red licorice by Beyer- that was yet another three coast. A lot of work BUT I had the help of a very handsome and experienced painter

So the next step was to distress, I used my hand dandy mouse sander and went to work- to me this is the fun part- call me crazy. I believe I have to find a better tool out there for distressing, as I go forward I am sure I will come up with something. Anyway, here is the paint and then distressed part.

So then I put on an ebony stain and finished the project with a polyurethane coat- sorry I don't have pictures of that but I do have pictures of the finished piece.

So I like it, maybe it's a little too shiny and maybe I would use a lighter stain next time but I am a little rusty at this process so it'll take me a while to get back in the swing of things. LEO TOLSTOY HERE I COME!
